Some time ago I dreamed I was a passenger of a tramcar,
run off in a delicate turn. I alighted to assist the driver: ‘A little more to the left, now to the right…’ The dream frightened me. Surely I was not the one to get my church and our education back on the track again? Marcellus became a pope in 307. The reconstruction and rebuilding of the church was his major task. He welcomed Christians who had given in under pressure of the Roman persecutors, but orthodox believers rejected this idea. It took only two years before Marcellus was exiled. So I should be cautioned. Nevertheless I think it’s a challenge to think like a modern Marcellus these days. And in case I’ll be exiled because outsiders agree with me but the passengers don’t, I can only say: I should have known better. ![]() |
